Can you give a pet a forever home?

Once again, Stuff has teamed up with SPCA New Zealand over the festive season to feature 12 (well, technically 15) potential pets who could really use homes.

This year’s entries came from across the country, ranging from dogs and cats to sheep and guinea pigs.

Many of the animals we chose to feature are SPCA long-timers; some have had a rough start to life, while others could simply use little extra help in finding their forever home.

A few have managed to do just that, thanks to loving families who welcomed them into their lives, but there are plenty more still looking for their perfect match.

While all of these animals would love to find a home this festive season, the SPCA also wants to remind potential adopters that pets really aren’t the best Christmas gift. The reality is that some of those surprise “gifts” might end up unwanted and unloved by a person who never planned for them.

“When you’re thinking of opening your life and home to an animal, you need to carefully consider the long-term commitment you’re making,” says SPCA CEO Andrea Midgen.

“We understand that people who want to give pets as gifts invariably have good intentions, but it is unfair to give an animal to anyone unless you are absolutely certain that the person wants that particular animal as a companion and is willing and able to give a lifetime of proper care.”
