The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) Security Forces Patrol Dog Unit has added extra bite to operations at RAAF Base Townsville, which has experienced over 350 air movements since the start of Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025.
Personnel from the RAAF 27 Squadron Security Flight and their military working dogs have been patrolling around the clock to protect personnel and assets.
RNZAF military working dog handler Aircraftman Dylan McClintock and his six-year-old Belgian Malinois, Keno, flew across the Tasman Sea to support 27 Squadron during the exercise.
The deployment came with its challenges, including a rigorous acclimatization program to help Keno adjust to an unexpected adversary—the Australian heat.
“Keno has had very little exposure to heat and isn’t used to it at all,” Aircraftman McClintock explained.
“He normally works in much cooler climates, so I’ve had to take extra steps to prevent any heat stress.
“I’m also constantly alert to other Australian hazards that aren’t a concern back home, like ticks and snakes, which can be dangerous and unpredictable threats.
“The night patrols have been particularly challenging for Keno, exposing him to new buildings and surfaces while keeping him sharp.”
Aircraftman McClintock previously worked alongside Corporal Renee Cahill from 27 Squadron during Exercise Pitch Black in 2024.
However, this marks the first time the RNZAF Security Forces Patrol Dog Unit has been embedded within the squadron’s Security Flight.
Corporal Cahill said the ongoing collaboration has been highly beneficial, allowing both nations to dig deep and learn from one another.
“We share a lot of ideas, offer different perspectives, and draw on each other’s experiences,” she explained.
“It’s like having another set of eyes—every dog has its own personality, just like humans, so each handler brings unique insights.
“During Talisman Sabre, we’ve been working closely together, conducting detection and deterrence patrols around the airfield and aircraft to keep RAAF Base Townsville secure.
“With the high level of activity on base throughout the exercise, it’s crucial to maintain a strong presence to deter any potential threats.”
More than 40,000 military personnel from 19 nations are participating in Talisman Sabre, running from July 13 to August 4, 2025.
