Ragdolls: Why They Go Limp When You Pick Them Up

If you’ve ever held a Ragdoll cat, you may have noticed something unusual—they often relax completely in your arms, becoming wonderfully floppy. This distinctive trait is what inspired the breed’s name, but why do they do it?

A Relaxed and Trusting Nature

Ragdolls are renowned for their calm, gentle temperament. When they feel safe and comfortable, many will completely relax their muscles when picked up, allowing their body to go limp. It’s a sign that they trust the person holding them and feel secure.

Not every Ragdoll will go completely limp every time, but many display this behaviour to some degree. Just like people, each cat has its own unique personality.

It’s Not a Reflex

Contrary to popular belief, going limp isn’t an automatic reflex or something all Ragdolls are born doing. Instead, it’s a behavioural trait that has been encouraged through selective breeding. Over the years, breeders have favoured cats with calm, affectionate personalities, resulting in the laid-back temperament the breed is famous for today.

More Than Just a Lap Cat

Ragdolls are often described as “puppy-like” because they enjoy following their owners from room to room and love being involved in family life. They thrive on companionship and are happiest when they can spend time with their people, whether that’s relaxing on the sofa, greeting you at the door, or quietly supervising your daily activities.

Although they’re affectionate, not every Ragdoll wants to be carried all the time. It’s important to respect your cat’s body language and allow them to choose when they want cuddles.

Handle with Care

Because Ragdolls are so relaxed, it’s essential to support their entire body when lifting them. Always place one hand under the chest and the other beneath the hindquarters to keep them comfortable and prevent unnecessary strain.

A Gentle Giant with a Big Heart

With their striking blue eyes, silky coats, and affectionate personalities, it’s no surprise that Ragdolls are among the world’s most popular cat breeds. Their famous “floppy” nature is just one of the many reasons they make such wonderful companions.

Remember, while many Ragdolls live up to their name, every cat is an individual. Some are exceptionally floppy, while others simply enjoy being close to their favourite humans in their own unique way.
