Most people consider bathroom trips a private affair—but cat owners know better. While cats are famously independent, they’re not always fans of being left alone—especially behind closed doors. That includes the bathroom.
To explain this curious (and often comical) behaviour, Clinical Feline Behaviourist Amanda Campion took to social media to reveal why your cat just can’t resist tagging along when nature calls.
“Ever wondered why your cat follows you to the bathroom?” Amanda asked in her video. “Privacy? Not when you have a cat.”
- They’re Incredibly Curious
Amanda’s first reason is simple: curiosity. “Cats are curious creatures, and they see a closed door as a barrier to something they might be missing out on,” she explained. So when you shut the bathroom door, your cat may be more intrigued by what they can’t see.
- It’s Uninterrupted One-on-One Time
Beyond curiosity, your bathroom breaks may offer rare moments of undivided attention. “To your cat, a bathroom visit is quality one-on-one time,” Amanda said. “You’re stationary, distraction-free—a perfect chance for them to hang out with you.”
- Bathrooms Are Full of Fascinating Smells
Amanda also noted that cats are drawn to the unique scent-scape of the bathroom. “And I don’t just mean the obvious,” she added with a smile. “Smells from the plughole, scented products, deodorants—it’s all interesting to them.”
- Sinks Make Great Cat Beds
Many cats also gravitate toward bathroom sinks. Amanda explained: “Sinks are cozy, elevated, and shaped like a snug little nest. I’ve seen so many cats happily curled up in them—they feel safe there.”
A Sign of Affection
While it might feel intrusive at times, Amanda reminded viewers that this behaviour is actually a sign of deep attachment. “When your cat follows you to the bathroom, take it as a compliment. It means they feel bonded to you,” she said. “So make the most of it—give them a few extra minutes of attention.”
